Looking Back at 2012 and Moving On to 2013

Happy New Year! Every year, at the beginning of the year, I like to reflect on the previous year and plan for the following year. In 2012, The Zeis Studio got its own website and blog, which I am very happy about. We also had an exciting time out in Denver, Colorado for the book release, “Tattooing as You Like It: The Legacy of Milton Zeis.”  The Zeis Studio also acquired back more original artwork and the collection became ever more intact. Overall, it was a positive year and I look forward to 2013.   While I am sad and apologetic that more was not accomplished in 2012, I am excited for future collaborations and plans in 2013. I remind myself that The Zeis Studio is a hobby of mine and in remembrance of my great-grandfather, Milton Zeis. So in 2013, I plan to archive the memorabilia left behind by Mr. Zeis and the tattoo community and share my progress with all of you. I would appreciate your support and feel free to nudge me along in the process. Sometimes I get caught up in my “busy” life and could use some help getting back on track. 🙂 Also, I would like to be in another tattoo convention. Do you have any suggestions on conventions that would be good to go to (let me know in the comments below)?...

Milton Zeis Remembered – Tattooing As You Like It: The Legacy of Milton Zeis

Milton H Zeis // Tattooing As You Like It // Book promo from Andy Mitchell on Vimeo. In June of this year I was privileged enough to take a trip to Denver, Colorado for the book release party for Tattooing As You Like It: The Legacy of Milton Zeis. It was my second time meeting Scott Boyer, author of the book, and his fiancee, Kayla Gronseth. The party was located at the Denver Press Club and very much suited the era of Milton’s work. Many came out for the party and I was pleased with the turnout. I had a great time viewing the book for the first time, socializing, and of course dancing! (See pictures here)   Scott and Kayla put in a lot of time and energy into doing research and putting the book together. Tattooing As You Like It is a 291 page book that compiles Milton Zeis’s personal and professional life. It shares his legendary story and how he impacted the tattooing community. The book contains information on where it all began, how he grew the business, and how it all concluded. There are also nice pictures of The Zeis Studio catalogs and advertisements, as well as design sheets. It also shares some of Zeis’s School lessons, correspondence, and marketing. At the end of Tattooing As You Like It, 100 tattooers were asked to replicate...

The Zeis Studio Lives On

“Tattooing?…Great-Grandpa?…What was that all about?” Believe it or not, Great-Grandpa Milton and The Zeis Studio were not mentioned much while I was growing up. After Milton passed away in 1972 my grand-parents kept the business going for Lorena (Milton’s second wife) for another 10 years or so. They filled the orders as best they could, but they were not experts in the industry and my grand-father wanted very little to do with the tattoo industry. It wasn’t until my college years that I began to research(see ‘About Me‘ section) and dig deep into the greatness that is Milton Zeis...
